Harry Gwala District Science week
The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) this week hosts its sixth consecutive Science Week in the Harry Gwala District of KwaZulu-Natal. Running from 4 to 8 May 2026, the programme is organised in partnership with the Harry Gwala District Department of Basic Education and is on track to be the largest edition in its history.
This year’s theme — “From Knowledge to Action: Using STEMI to Build Sustainable and Climate Resilient Communities” — marks a deliberate shift in approach. Rather than simply introducing learners to the world of science, the programme challenges them to apply their knowledge to real problems facing their communities. Competition subthemes centre on climate adaptation, disaster preparedness, and sustainable economic growth, giving learners meaningful and relevant problems to engage with.
The proposed 2026 schedule runs across five days. Monday, 4 May will be held in Kokstad, covering the Mt Currie and Samaria Circuits. Tuesday, 5 May moves to Mzimkhulu, followed by Ixopo on Wednesday, 6 May. Thursday, 7 May returns to Pholela, and the week closes on Friday, 8 May with the Competition and Awards Day at a venue still to be confirmed.
SANSA invites the public to follow the Science week activities and celebrate the incredible work of learners, educators, and scientists coming together to inspire the next generation of South African STEMI leaders.
