The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) and the Border Management Authority (BMA) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the provision of Satellite Earth Observation Intelligence in support of national border security.
This collaboration aligns with SANSA’s mandate to provide space-based intelligence solutions that benefit humanity and support national development priorities.
Through this partnership, SANSA will support the BMA in fulfilling its mandate to secure and manage South Africa’s ports of entry and oversee border law enforcement functions. SANSA’s Earth Observation data and intelligence capabilities will enhance the BMA’s efforts to improve monitoring and management of South African borders and ports of entry and facilitate trade to promote economic growth and regional cooperation.
SANSA remains committed to delivering forward-looking, operationally relevant solutions that harness Earth Observation data to inform decision-making, strengthen national resilience, and contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s development agenda for the betterment of its people.
SANSA’s CEO emphasised that SANSA’s mandate requires the agency to acquire, assimilate, and disseminate satellite data to any organs of state. Through its multi-user agreement approach, SANSA helps government departments save significant costs on accessing satellite data. He highlighted that the collaboration with the Authority (BMA) will enable the provision of satellite technology, data, and products and services to strengthen the BMA’s operations. He expressed excitement about the partnership, noting that it will support the BMA in delivering its mandate and contribute to building a capable state.
Dr Nkhuliseni Luvhengo, Assistant Commissioner in the Commissioner’s Office at the BMA, stated that this collaboration will transform border management through innovation and technology development.
