Space Talk: Space Weather Impacts on Commercial Space

Space Weather Impacts on Commercial Space

Mark Moldwin, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Climate and Space Sciences
and Engineering, University of Michigan

Civilization is becoming more and more dependent on space technology for
communication, navigation, aviation, environmental hazard monitoring,
defense, and weather forecasting. New approaches, led by new companies
are decreasing the cost of accessing space and exponentially increasing
the numbers of satellites launched each year.  This presentation
describes how space weather – the dynamic space environment that impacts
our space-based and ground-based technology – is one of the biggest
threats to the burgeoning space economy and our modern civilization.
