International Astronautical Congress (IAC)
The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), in partnership with the Aerospace Maritime and Defence Industries Association of South Africa and the South African National Space Agency, will lead the participation of the South African space sector at the upcoming International Astronautical Congress to be held in Antalya from 05–09 October 2026.
The theme for IAC 2026, “The World Needs More Space,” presents a programme that encourages visionary ideas, innovative technologies, and pioneering research. In an era where the exploration and utilisation of outer space are becoming increasingly critical, the theme underscores the importance of maintaining a secure, accessible, and collaborative space environment.
Space capabilities contribute significantly towards improving our understanding of climate change, adapting to environmental realities, and identifying sustainable pathways for humanity. In this regard, the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) continues to advocate for greater global dialogue on the sustainability of the space environment, including the safeguarding of orbital slots, spacecraft operations, frequencies, and other critical space resources necessary for the long-term viability of space activities.
A total of fifteen (15) South African companies will be accommodated on the SA Inc. Exhibition Stand to showcase South Africa’s advanced space technologies and capabilities through exhibition hardware, software, and related innovations.
The dtic will support participating companies through its Sector Specific Assistance Scheme (SSAS), which is aimed at promoting South African value-added products and services in export markets, facilitating market access, enhancing international competitiveness, and creating opportunities for investment and trade. The scheme provides financial support for qualifying costs associated with participation in international exhibitions and trade platforms.
In this regard, AMD will serve as the coordinating body for the implementation and administration of the process on behalf of the participating South African space industry companies.
