The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) is once again proud to be an agency partner for the world’s largest global hackathon, the NASA Space Apps Challenge, set to take place 4-5 October 2025.
Coinciding with World Space Week, this global hackathon promises to set young minds ablaze solving challenges in space and on Earth, using data supplied by space agencies from across the globe.
The challenges for this year’s hackathon have been released and offer a wide variety of problems to solve from hunting exoplanets using AI, to creating a visual tool to map out global flowering phenology. There are 18 challenges to choose from across a variety of difficulty levels, in other words, there is something for everyone!
All the challenges can be viewed here: https://www.spaceappschallenge.org/2025/challenges/
There will be two in-person hackathon local events in South Africa. The Cape Town event will take place at the Future-Innovation Lab at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and the event in Pretoria will be hosted by the University of Pretoria.
Participants farther afield can join these in-person events via Zoom where resources and mentors will be available to assist teams.
To register as a participating team and for more information, visit the NASA Space Apps Challenge site here: https://www.spaceappschallenge.org/2025, create a login and join the Cape Town or Pretoria local events.
