The New Earth Observations Frontiers (NEOFrontiers) initiative is a crucial funding program designed to enhance South Africa’s capabilities in Earth observation (EO). Led by the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) in partnership with the National Research Foundation (NRF)- both are entities of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) – this initiative aims to strengthen both the public and private sectors within the EO field, facilitating innovative solutions to some of the country’s most pressing challenges.
‘This initiative transforms space-based ideas into tangible products and services. Recognising the challenges Earth Observation startups face in attracting investment or risk capital, the DSTI is committed to reshaping the industry narrative.’ said SANSA CEO, Humbulani Mudau.
The program has attracted an overwhelming response, with 56 applicants competing for support. This substantial interest highlights the growing awareness of the potential that Earth observation technologies offer across various sectors, including agriculture, environmental management, and urban planning. Following a thorough selection process, 26 candidates were shortlisted based on their innovative proposals and potential impact. Ultimately, eight outstanding small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) were awarded funding.
The eight successful applicants are well-positioned to make significant contributions to their respective fields, each demonstrating a strong commitment to innovation and sustainability:
