A delegation from the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) is currently in Nairobi, Kenya, attending the AfriGEO Symposium from 12th to 15th August 2024. This year’s symposium is centered around the theme “Earth Intelligence for Africa.”

AfriGEO, an initiative of the African continent within the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), serves as a coordination framework and platform to enhance Africa’s participation in GEO and contribute to the development of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). The AfriGEO network comprises 32 Africa-based GEO member states and 11 participating regional institutions, collectively known as the African Caucus.

GEO is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to improving the availability, accessibility, and use of Earth observation data for societal benefits. Its global priorities include supporting the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Climate Agreement, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and Sustainable Urban Development.

The AfriGEO Secretariat, hosted by the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) in Nairobi, Kenya, was officially appointed during the 3rd AfriGEO Symposium in Gabon and began its operations in May 2019.

As one of the founding members of AfriGEO, South Africa has played a significant role in the initiative’s inception. SANSA continues to be an active participant in the African continent’s efforts to develop innovative space intelligence solutions that will shape the future of Africa.
