The use of Earth Observation data and geospatial technology to support decision-making in local municipality areas

Training provider: South African Space Agency (SANSA)

Description: Earth observation (EO) data, in particular, satellite imagery, plays an important role in achieving sustainable development goals. EO data provides valuable information required to understand human activities and the natural environment. The aim of the training is to create awareness of the use of EO data and geospatial technologies to support evidence-based decision-making at the district and local municipality levels. The training will provide the participants with practical applications of remote sensing and other geospatial data in spatial planning, disaster and natural resource management at a district or local municipality level, with a focus on South Africa and potential applications around the world.

This online course consists of two sessions. The morning session introduces the basics of GIS and remotes sensing and its applications in local government. The afternoon session provides hands-on practical training on data visualization and analysis. Participants are required to download the QGIS software before the start of the training.

Objective: By the end of this training, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand different geospatial data capturing techniques, tools and software;
  • Search discover and request relevant geospatial data and information;
  • Use GIS software to capture, manipulate and analyze various datasets;
  • Integrate geospatial data with socioeconomic data etc.;
  • Integrate geospatial data and information in planning, reporting and monitoring;
  • Use geospatial data and information to understand the status of development and service delivery in their district; and
  • Identify geospatial data and information required during planning and reporting.
