Space Operations

Products & Services

The SANSA Space Operations Programme specialises in a wide range of space mission support services. With over 60 years in operations the Hartebeeshoek facility has become one of the most sort after ground stations in the world. SANSA Space Operations operates and maintains more than 40 locally installed antennas and many ground stations on site.

The facility provides full-motion TT&C (telemetry, tracking, and command) antennas, and remote sensing systems across all frequency bands (and in S-band for mobile support).

The activities of the TT&C group at SANSA Space Operations are driven primarily by the needs of international clients. The operational efficiencies that these clients require have driven the consistently reliable performance of the Space Operations division at Hartebeesthoek, which has established itself as the most reputable TT&C tracking station on the African continent.

Products & Services

The Hartebeesthoek site operates around the clock and throughout the year to support satellite launches. The antenna systems are located across 40 secured locations on the 4000 ha site and are available in L, S, C, Ext C, X, Ku, DBS, and Ka frequency bands, as well as S-band for mobile support. Seven of the antennas are full-motion TT&C antennas.

The antennas at Hartebeeshoek facility can track satellite that covers an area over the Southern African continent from 3° to 50° south of the equator (as far north as Bujumbura in Burundi). They generate a wide variety of data and can transmit these as images that range from a low to a very high resolution.

SANSA regularly supports more than 30 launch support missions yearly. Our services include:

  • Launcher support
  • Spacecraft Low Early Orbit Phases (LEOP)
  • Emergency support
  • TOS (transfer-orbit support), and
  • IOT (in-orbit test)

The Hartebeeshoek facility has established itself as the most reputable Tracking, Telemetry, and Command (TT&C)  tracking station on the African Continent. The station has supported over 600 spacecraft in low-Earth orbits and high-altitude geostationary orbits, maintaining service levels at 100% always. The TT&C capabilities of the staff and facilities at Hartebeesthoek enables the station to support any ground segment requirements

The long-term operational experience at SANSA SO allows the organisation to provide clients with exceptional hosting and maintenance services. The team of highly skilled experts has capabilities in establishing, upgrading, and modifying ground segment facilities by providing the following:

  • Site identification,
  • Site surveys,
  • Project management,
  • System Engineering,
  • Architectural and Civil services,
  • Electrical and mechanical services, and
  • Infrastructure establishment.

Teleports are the ground-based side of the global satellite network. They provide terrestrial networks with access to satellite transponders in orbit 36,200 km above the Equator. Teleports are thus the channel by which a satellite can be integrated into complex networks involving fibre, microwave, wireless and mobile technologies in order to expand their reach beyond the edge of the network, broadcast one-to-many, or feed bandwidth-hungry applications.
