Dr Bob Scholes

Dr Robert (Bob) Scholes

Dr Bob Scholes is a Systems Ecologist at the CSIR and a CSIR Fellow. He studies the global carbon cycle and effects of global change on biodiversity and ecosystem function. He helped to develop the Global Earth Observing System of Systems and is currently the Chair of the Group on Earth Observation Biodiversity Observation Network. Dr Scholes also participated in the design of the South African Multispectral Microsatellite Imager.

Before joining the CSIR, he was manager of the South African Savanna Biome Programme. He has over 20 years of field experience in many parts of Africa and has published widely in the field of Savanna ecology and global change. He has served on several international steering committees, including the Intenational Geosphere-Biosphere Programme and Global Climate Observing System. He attained his PhD at the University of the Witwatersrand.
